How to use this calculator
Follow this tool’s steps, then review its formula, assumptions, and limits below.
When to use this calculator
- Planning a $200 auction budget before your 2026 fantasy draft (NFL kickoff September 10)
- Comparing Balanced vs Hero RB vs Zero RB position allocations side by side
- Adjusting for deeper rosters (18 spots) or shallow benches (5 spots)
- Custom league budgets ($100, $300, $1,000) — the split scales automatically
- Setting maximum-bid guardrails per position so you don't get sniped into a bad roster
- Deciding how much to leave for $1-$3 bench fliers late in the auction

How it works
How Auction Draft Budgeting Works
In a standard fantasy football auction every manager gets the same budget — $200 in most ESPN, Yahoo and Sleeper leagues — and must fill every roster spot with a minimum bid of $1. That creates the core constraint:
Bench Reserve = bench spots × $ per bench spot (usually $1)
Starter Budget = Total Budget − Bench Reserve
Position Budget = Starter Budget × strategy %With a 16-man roster (9 starters, 7 bench) and a $200 budget, you reserve $7 for the bench and work with $193 for starters.
Position Splits by Strategy (% of starter budget)
| Position | Balanced | RB-heavy | Zero RB | Stars & Scrubs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QB | 8% | 6% | 8% | 5% |
| RB | 38% | 52% | 18% | 45% |
| WR | 38% | 28% | 56% | 40% |
| TE | 10% | 8% | 12% | 4% |
| DST | 3% | 3% | 3% | 3% |
| K | 3% | 3% | 3% | 3% |
Worked Example — $200, Balanced, 7 Bench Spots
| Line | Math | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Bench reserve | 7 × $1 | $7 |
| Starter budget | $200 − $7 | $193 |
| QB | 8% × $193 | $15 |
| RB | 38% × $193 | $73 |
| WR | 38% × $193 | $73 |
| TE | 10% × $193 | $19 |
| DST | 3% × $193 | $6 |
| K | remainder | $7 |
That RB/WR pool of ~$146 typically buys two top-15 players (~$45-$60 each) plus two mid-tier starters (~$15-$25 each).
