Ovulation and Menstrual Cycle Calendar Calculator

Per ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) and the CDC's reproductive health guidance, ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period, regardless of cycle length. The fertile window spans 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation (sperm can survive that long in fertile cervical mucus) plus ovulation day itself (the egg lives 12–24 hours). This calculator estimates ovulation day, fertile window, and next predicted period from your last menstrual period (LMP) and average cycle length — the same calendar method used in US OB/GYN clinics and CDC fertility tracking education. For maximum accuracy, combine with basal body temperature, FDA-cleared LH ovulation strips, or cervical mucus observation.

When to use this calculator

  • You're trying to conceive and want to know your most fertile days.
  • You use the calendar method as a complement to contraception.
  • You want to plan intercourse to maximize the chances of conception.
  • Your OB/GYN asked you to record your cycle and ovulation dates.
  • You want to better understand your menstrual cycle and its phases.

Example: LMP April 1, 28-day cycle

  1. LMP: April 1, 2026.
  2. Cycle length: 28 days.
  3. Ovulation: day 14 of the cycle = April 15, 2026.
  4. Fertile window: April 10 to April 15 (5 days before + day of ovulation).
Result: Your ovulation is approximately April 15, 2026. Your fertile window runs from April 10 to April 15. Next period: April 29, 2026 (US date format: MM/DD/YYYY → 04/29/2026).

How it works

How it's calculated

The algorithm uses the Ogino method (1930) validated by modern fertility research:

ovulation_day = last_period_date + (cycle_length − 14)
fertile_window = [ovulation_day − 5, ovulation_day + 1]
next_period = last_period_date + cycle_length

The 14-day luteal phase is remarkably stable across women (range 11–16 days), while the follicular phase varies with cycle length.

Special cases

  • Irregular cycles (PCOS, thyroid): calendar method is unreliable; use LH strips or ultrasound.

  • Breastfeeding: ovulation can return before first period; calendar method not valid.

  • Postpartum: first 3 cycles after birth tend to be anovulatory.

  • Perimenopause: luteal phase shortens; fertility drops but pregnancy still possible.

  • Hormonal contraception withdrawal: cycles may be irregular for 1–3 months; use symptom tracking.
  • Common mistakes

    1. Assuming day 14 for every woman: this only applies to a 28-day cycle; longer cycles ovulate later.
    2. Ignoring the 5-day sperm lifespan: fertile window starts before ovulation, not on ovulation day.
    3. Using calendar method as contraception: failure rate 10–25% per year; not reliable without backup.
    4. Not tracking multiple cycles: use at least 6 months of data for reliable prediction.
    5. Confusing spotting with period start: count day 1 as first day of full flow.

    Frequently asked questions

    How long does the fertile window last?

    The fertile window lasts approximately 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation + the day of ovulation. The day with the highest chance of conception is the day before ovulation (~30% probability).

    How do I know how long my menstrual cycle is?

    Count from the first day of bleeding of one period to the first day of bleeding of the next. Do this for 3–6 months and take the average. A normal cycle lasts between 21 and 35 days.

    Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?

    It's very unlikely but not impossible, especially if your cycles are irregular and ovulation happens at a different time than estimated. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so an inaccurate calculation could miss fertile days.

    Does it work as contraception?

    The calendar method (Ogino-Knaus) has 75–88% effectiveness with typical use, well below modern methods (pill 91%, IUD 99%). It is not recommended as a primary contraceptive method. Consult your OB/GYN.

    When is the best time to have sex if I want to conceive?

    The 2–3 days before ovulation are the most fertile. Ideally, have sex every 1–2 days throughout the fertile window (5 days before ovulation through the day of ovulation).

    Does the calculator work with irregular cycles?

    With irregular cycles the estimate is less precise. If your cycle varies by more than 5 days between one and the next, combine the calendar method with basal temperature and LH tests.

    What is the luteal phase and how long does it last?

    The luteal phase is the period between ovulation and the next period. It normally lasts 12–16 days (average 14). It's fairly constant in each woman. A luteal phase shorter than 10 days can indicate a hormonal issue that makes implantation difficult.
