The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) created a temporary 'No Tax on Tips' deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028. If you work in a customarily tipped occupation — server, bartender, barber, delivery driver, and similar roles — you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from your federal income tax.

The deduction does not make tips disappear from your taxes entirely. Tips are still wages: they remain subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, and your employer still reports them. What the law removes is the federal income tax on up to $25,000 of them.

Enter your qualified tips for the year, your filing status, and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI). The calculator applies the $25,000 cap, the $150,000 / $300,000 phase-out, and estimates the federal income tax you would save.

When to use this calculator

  • See how much of your tip income you can deduct in 2026.
  • Estimate the federal income tax your tip deduction saves.
  • Check whether your income phases out the tip deduction.
  • Confirm the $25,000 cap applies to your total qualified tips.
  • Understand that tips still owe Social Security and Medicare tax.
  • Plan estimated taxes as a server, bartender, or driver.
  • Compare the deduction at different tip and income levels.
  • Decide how much to set aside for taxes on tips.

Maximum 2026 tip deduction by MAGI (single filer)

MAGIPhase-out reductionMax deduction remaining
$150,000 or less$0$25,000
$175,000$2,500$22,500
$200,000$5,000$20,000
$300,000$15,000$10,000
$400,000 or more$25,000$0

Source: IRS OBBBA tips deduction (2025-2028). Reduction is $100 per $1,000 of MAGI over $150,000 (single) / $300,000 (married filing jointly). Cap is a flat $25,000 for all filers.

How it works

How the tip deduction works

Eligible tips = min(qualified tips, $25,000)
Phase-out = −$100 of deduction per $1,000 of MAGI over the threshold
Threshold      = $150,000 single / $300,000 married filing jointly
Tax saved ≈ deduction × your marginal federal rate

The $25,000 cap is a flat amount — it does not double for married couples the way the overtime cap does. Only qualified tips in occupations that customarily and regularly received tips before 2025 count; automatic service charges and non-tipped income do not.

The phase-out

MAGI (single)ReductionMax deduction left
$150,000 or less$0$25,000
$175,000$2,500$22,500
$200,000$5,000$20,000
$400,000$25,000$0

For married filing jointly the phase-out starts at $300,000 and uses the same $100-per-$1,000 rate.

What still applies to tips

  • Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) payroll taxes still apply.

  • Tips are still reported to your employer and on your W-2.

  • State income tax may still apply, depending on your state.
  • Who qualifies

  • Workers in occupations that customarily receive tips (the IRS maintains a published list of qualifying occupations).

  • Available with or without itemizing.

  • Married filers must file jointly.

  • Valid for tax years 2025–2028.
  • Disclaimer

Educational estimate of a federal deduction. Savings depend on your full return and marginal rate. It does not model state tax or credits. Confirm that your occupation and tips qualify per current IRS guidance, and consult a tax professional.

Example: $12,000 of tips, single, $40,000 MAGI

Qualified tips $12,000 are below the $25,000 cap, so all $12,000 count.
MAGI $40,000 is below the $150,000 phase-out, so there is no reduction.
    Deduction = $12,000.
At a 12% marginal rate, that saves about $1,440 in federal income tax.
Deduction $12,000; about $1,440 in federal tax saved

    Frequently asked questions

Are tips completely tax-free in 2026?
No. The deduction removes federal income tax on up to $25,000 of qualified tips, but tips still owe Social Security and Medicare tax and may owe state income tax. Tips above $25,000, or income once you phase out, remain fully taxable.
What is the maximum tip deduction?
$25,000 of qualified tips per return. Unlike the overtime deduction, this cap is the same for single and married filers — it does not double for joint returns.
Who qualifies for the No Tax on Tips deduction?
Workers in occupations that customarily and regularly received tips before 2025 — such as servers, bartenders, barbers, hairstylists, and delivery drivers. The IRS publishes a list of qualifying occupations. Mandatory service charges do not count as tips.
At what income does the tip deduction phase out?
It phases out when MAGI exceeds $150,000 (single) or $300,000 (married filing jointly), falling $100 per $1,000 over the threshold. A single filer's deduction reaches $0 near $400,000 MAGI.
Do I still pay Social Security tax on tips?
Yes. Tips remain subject to Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) payroll taxes. The deduction only removes federal income tax on the qualified amount, not payroll tax.
Can I claim it with the standard deduction?
Yes. The tip deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction, and is claimed separately on your return.
Which years does it apply to?
Tax years 2025 through 2028. It is a temporary OBBBA provision and expires after 2028 unless Congress extends it.
Do married tipped workers have to file jointly?
Yes. If you are married, you must file a joint return to claim the tip deduction. Married filing separately cannot take it.
