How long will it take you to learn English? It depends on your current level, your goal, and the real weekly hours you put in. According to the U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI), English-level proficiency in a Category I language takes roughly 600–750 hours of active instruction to reach B2–C1 from scratch. This calculator takes the hours you still need for your target level and the effective weekly hours you can study, and returns the estimated weeks — with real exam context (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge).
When to use this calculator
Calculate how long it takes to go from B1 to B2 at your current pace (e.g., 200 hours ÷ 8 h/week = 25 weeks).
Plan when you can sit IELTS or TOEFL by fixing the date and working out the weekly hours required.
Compare intensities: an intensive course (15 h/week) vs. independent study (5 h/week) to be ready before a job interview.
Check whether a program's pace (e.g., Duolingo 20 min/day ≈ 2 h/week) is realistic for reaching B2 within the advertised timeframe.
Study hours per week: 8 h (e.g., 4 one-hour classes + 4 h of independent practice).
Calculation: 200 ÷ 8 = 25 weeks (≈ 5.8 months).
Enter: 200 hours and 8 h/week → Result: 25.0 weeks.
25.0 weeks to reach B2 at 8 h/week (≈ 5.8 months)
Frequently asked questions
How many hours do I need to reach B2 English from zero?
Per FSI-based estimates, English requires 500–600 cumulative hours to reach B2 (equivalent to Cambridge FCE or IELTS 5.5–6.5). At 1 effective hour per day, that's roughly 20–24 months without immersion. At 3 hours daily, it compresses to 8–12 months.
How many weeks separate B1 from B2?
The gap between B1 (~350 h) and B2 (~550 h) is approximately 200 hours. At 10 h/week = 20 weeks (≈ 5 months). At 5 h/week = 40 weeks (≈ 10 months).
What is the difference between FSI and CEFR?
They are different frameworks. The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) classifies proficiency levels from A1 to C2 based on observable skills. The FSI (U.S. Foreign Service Institute) estimates instruction hours needed to reach proficiency. The FSI classifies languages by difficulty for English speakers into categories; this calculator uses FSI-style hour benchmarks mapped onto CEFR levels.
How many hours separate B2 from C1, and C1 from C2?
From B2 to C1: ~150–200 additional hours (cumulative total ~700–800 h). From C1 to C2: ~300–400 additional hours. The C1-to-C2 plateau is the longest; many learners stall because they already 'get by' and stop practicing deliberately.
Do apps like Duolingo count as FSI hours?
Only partially. FSI hours assume structured instruction with active production. Duolingo trains vocabulary and receptive comprehension but limits spoken output. One hour of Duolingo equals roughly 0.3–0.5 h of FSI-style study. Using it as a complement (10–15 min/day) is optimal — not as the core of your plan.
What level do I need to work at an international company?
B2 minimum, C1 preferred for roles with frequent communication in English. In tech/IT, B1+ can be enough for technical roles. Global companies commonly ask for TOEFL ≥ 90 or IELTS ≥ 6.5 in hiring processes.
How many weeks do I need to study before taking IELTS or TOEFL?
Invert the formula: if you know the exam date, divide the hours you're missing by the weeks available to get the weekly hours required. Example: you're 200 hours short and have 20 weeks → you need 10 effective h/week.
Do I lose my level if I stop practicing English?
Yes, and faster than expected. Without practice, a C1 regresses to B2 in 6–12 months, and a B2 drops to B1 in 18–24 months. Speaking rusts first. To maintain your level: 15–20 min/day of input + 1 weekly conversation.
What's the most efficient method to learn English as an adult?
The research literature (Krashen, Nation) agrees: massive comprehensible input (material at 70–90% comprehension) + regular output (speaking and writing even with mistakes) + immediate feedback + daily consistency. A practical scheme: 30 min of input + 15 min of output + 10 min of flashcard review per day.
