How it works

How to Convert Any Grade to GPA 4.0

The standard conversion formula is:

GPA = (your grade ÷ maximum scale) × 4.0

This works for any grading system worldwide — percentages, decimals, or points. A 14/20 in France, an 8/10 in Argentina, or a 88% in the US all convert through the same ratio.

How the Calculation Works

The formula scales your grade proportionally to the 4.0 range:

1. Divide your grade by the maximum possible grade on your scale
2. Multiply the result by 4.0

Examples:

  • 88/100 → (88 ÷ 100) × 4.0 = 3.52

  • 8/10 → (8 ÷ 10) × 4.0 = 3.20

  • 14/20 → (14 ÷ 20) × 4.0 = 2.80

  • 13/15 → (13 ÷ 15) × 4.0 = 3.47
  • This gives you a single-course GPA equivalent. To calculate your cumulative GPA across multiple courses, you must weight each course by its credit hours (see below).

    Cumulative GPA: Credit-Weighted Average

Most universities calculate GPA by weighting each course grade by its credit value:

    Cumulative GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Total Credit Hours)

    CourseCreditsGradeGrade PointsWeighted
    Math4A (4.0)4.016.0
    History3B+ (3.3)3.39.9
    Biology3A− (3.7)3.711.1
    Total1037.0

    GPA = 37.0 ÷ 10 = 3.70

A single high-credit course can move your GPA significantly more than a low-credit elective.

    > Note: Letter grade cutoffs vary by institution. Some universities assign A+ = 4.0, others cap A+ at 4.0 with no extra weight. Always check your school's official grading policy.

    GPA Benchmarks You Should Know

  • 4.0: Perfect — all A's. Required for many merit scholarships.

  • 3.7+: Honors / Dean's List territory. Competitive for top graduate programs (MBA, law, medicine).

  • 3.5+: Strong. Qualifies for most scholarships and graduate admissions.

  • 3.0+: Good standing. Minimum GPA for many graduate programs (including most US master's degrees) and honors societies like Phi Beta Kappa.

  • 2.0: The typical minimum to avoid academic probation at US universities.

  • Below 2.0: Academic risk — most programs require improvement to continue enrollment.
  • Common Grade Scale Conversions

    Your SystemExample GradeGPA Result
    Percentage (0–100)88/1003.52
    Argentine scale (0–10)8/103.20
    French scale (0–20)14/202.80
    German scale (1–6, inverted)2/6— *
    UK classification2:1 (upper second)≈ 3.3–3.5
    Indian percentage75/1003.00

\The German scale runs 1 (best) to 6 (fail) — it is inverted and cannot use the standard formula directly. A German 1.0 corresponds approximately to a 4.0 GPA; a 2.0 to roughly 3.0–3.3. Each university may map it differently.*

What This Calculator Does NOT Include

  • Plus/minus weighting differences between institutions (some schools don't award A+ > 4.0)

  • Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit courses, which are typically excluded from GPA calculations

  • Graduate vs. undergraduate GPA scales — some programs use a separate calculation

  • WES or NACES evaluations for official foreign credential recognition, which require a formal transcript assessment
  • Common Errors to Avoid

  • Using the wrong maximum: A French 20 is not a percentage out of 100. Using 100 as the denominator would give a falsely low GPA.

  • Confusing a single-course conversion with cumulative GPA: Converting one grade to 4.0 scale is not the same as your overall GPA.

  • Assuming universal letter grade mappings: An "A" at one university may start at 90%, at another at 93%. The percentage column — not the letter — gives the most accurate conversion.

  • Ignoring credit hours: Averaging grade points without weighting by credits produces an incorrect cumulative GPA.
  • For official applications (graduate admissions, scholarships, visa requirements), always verify the conversion standard requested by the receiving institution. Many US graduate programs use their own internal conversion tables rather than the proportional formula.

Worked Example: 85 out of 100

    Grade: 85 | Max scale: 100
    Ratio: 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85
    GPA: 0.85 × 4.0 = 3.40
Band: B (good standing) — qualifies for most US programs
    GPA = 3.40 out of 4.0

    Frequently asked questions

What is the formula to convert a grade to GPA 4.0?
    The formula is: GPA = (your grade ÷ maximum possible grade) × 4.0. For example, if you scored 88 out of 100, your GPA is (88 ÷ 100) × 4.0 = 3.52.
What GPA is considered good in the US?
Generally: 3.7+ is excellent (honors/Dean's List), 3.5+ is strong (competitive for grad school), 3.0+ is good standing, and 2.0+ means you're passing. Top universities like MIT or Harvard typically admit students with 3.9+ unweighted GPAs.
    How do I convert a 10-point scale (like Argentina's) to GPA 4.0?
    Enter your grade as 'v1' and 10 as the maximum scale. Example: an Argentine 8 out of 10 gives (8 ÷ 10) × 4.0 = 3.20 GPA. A 9 gives 3.60, a 10 gives 4.0.
What does a 4.0 GPA mean?
A 4.0 GPA means you earned the equivalent of straight A's (or A+ in all courses). It is the highest possible GPA on the standard US scale and is required for many full-tuition merit scholarships.
What GPA do I need to get into grad school?
Most master's programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA; top programs (MBA, law, medicine) typically want 3.5–3.8+. PhD programs often require 3.5+. Check each program's requirements, as GPA is weighed alongside test scores and research experience.
Is weighted GPA the same as this calculation?
No. Weighted GPA accounts for course difficulty (e.g., AP or honors classes get +0.5 to 1.0 extra points). This calculator uses unweighted GPA — a straight proportional conversion of your average. Unweighted GPA is the most common standard for international comparisons.
How do I convert a percentage grade to GPA without a calculator?
    Divide your percentage by 100, then multiply by 4. So 90% → (90/100) × 4 = 3.60. 75% → 3.00. 60% → 2.40. Memorize these anchor points: 100%=4.0, 75%=3.0, 50%=2.0.
Do all US colleges use exactly the same GPA scale?
Most use the 4.0 unweighted scale, but some schools use a weighted scale (up to 5.0 for AP classes) or a 4.3 scale (where A+ = 4.3). For applications, always check whether the school requests weighted or unweighted GPA.
What is the minimum GPA to avoid academic probation?
Typically 2.0 (equivalent to a C average). Most US colleges place students on academic probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, which may affect financial aid eligibility.
