Sharing a hotel room saves money, but splitting the bill gets messy the moment someone arrives late or checks out early. This calculator does both fair methods for you: an even split when everyone stays the same nights, and a split by nights stayed (person-nights) when stays differ — so the friend who only crashed for one night doesn't pay the same as the person who stayed the whole trip. Enter the total, the nights, and how many people, and you get each person's exact share plus a per-person-per-night rate you can paste straight into a Venmo, PayPal, or split-the-bill request.

When to use this calculator

  • Splitting a family vacation hotel when people arrive or leave on different days
  • A group trip where one friend checks out a night early
  • Figuring out each roommate's share of a shared hotel suite
  • Checking that a friend's Venmo or PayPal request matches the real hotel math
  • Budgeting the per-person hotel cost before booking a group trip
  • Splitting a bachelor / bachelorette weekend hotel fairly

How it works

How to split a hotel bill

There are two fair ways to split a hotel room. Pick based on whether everyone stayed the same number of nights.

  • Everyone stays the same nights → even split: Total ÷ number of travelers.

  • People stay different nights → split by person-nights: charge each person for the nights they actually occupied the room.
  • Even split quick-reference table

The table below shows the per-person share for a few common bill sizes and group sizes (the number of nights doesn't change the per-person total in an even split — only the per-night rate).

    Total bill2 people3 people4 people5 people6 people
    $300$150.00$100.00$75.00$60.00$50.00
    $600$300.00$200.00$150.00$120.00$100.00
    $900$450.00$300.00$225.00$180.00$150.00
    $1,200$600.00$400.00$300.00$240.00$200.00
    $1,500$750.00$500.00$375.00$300.00$250.00
    $2,000$1,000.00$666.67$500.00$400.00$333.33

    Even split formula

When all travelers stay the same number of nights:

Cost per night = Total bill ÷ number of nights
Share per person = Total bill ÷ number of travelers
Per person per night = Total bill ÷ (travelers × nights)

    Worked example — even split:

  • Total bill: $900

  • Nights: 3

  • Travelers: 4
  • Cost per night = $900 ÷ 3 = $300/night
    Share per person = $900 ÷ 4 = $225
    Per person per night = $900 ÷ (4 × 3) = $75/person/night

Each of the 4 people pays $225 for the whole stay, which works out to $75 per night each.

Split by nights (when someone checks out early)

When travelers stay different numbers of nights, the fair method is person-nights: each person's share is proportional to how many nights they occupied the room.

Total person-nights = sum of every traveler's nights
    Per person-night rate = Total bill ÷ total person-nights
Traveler share = (that traveler's nights) × per person-night rate

Worked example — split by nights:

  • Total bill: $900, over 3 nights

  • Traveler 1: 3 nights · Traveler 2: 3 nights · Traveler 3: 2 nights · Traveler 4: 3 nights
  • Total person-nights = 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 11
    Per person-night rate = $900 ÷ 11 ≈ $81.82/person-night

    Traveler 1 = 3 × $81.82 = $245.45
    Traveler 2 = 3 × $81.82 = $245.45
    Traveler 3 = 2 × $81.82 = $163.64
    Traveler 4 = 3 × $81.82 = $245.45
    Check: $245.45 × 3 + $163.64 = $900.00 ✓

    TravelerNightsShare
    13$245.45
    23$245.45
    32$163.64
    43$245.45
    Total11$900.00

Notice the early-checkout guest pays $163.64 instead of the flat $225 — that's the $61.36 an even split would have unfairly overcharged them.

Even vs. split-by-nights: which is fair?

When not to use this calculator / limitations

  • Different room types: if travelers are in separate rooms at different prices, split each room separately, then combine.

  • Per-person incidentals: mini-bar, room service, and per-person resort charges should be paid individually, not averaged into the room split.

  • Occupancy-based pricing: some hotels charge extra per additional guest. Split the base rate and the per-guest add-on separately.

  • Tax and service fees: include taxes in the total only if you want them shared. If one traveler is tax-exempt, subtract tax before entering the figure.

  • Currency: all amounts use a single currency. Convert a foreign-currency bill first.
  • Frequently asked questions

How do I split a hotel bill evenly between friends?
Divide the total bill by the number of people. A $900 hotel split among 4 friends is $900 ÷ 4 = $225 each, regardless of how many nights the stay was. The number of nights only changes the per-night rate ($300/night here), not each person's total share.
How do I split a hotel bill when someone leaves one night early?
Use the 'Split by nights stayed' method. Enter each person's actual nights. The calculator divides the total by total person-nights to get a per-person-night rate, then multiplies it by each person's nights. In a $900 / 3-night / 4-person trip, someone who stays only 2 nights pays $163.64 instead of $225.
Is splitting by person-nights actually fair?
For most group trips, yes. It assumes each night's room cost is shared equally among whoever was present that night. Everyone pays the same per-night rate; the only difference is how many nights they slept there. If someone has a separate bed or private arrangement, adjust manually.
What counts as the 'total hotel bill'?
Enter the full final invoice amount, including taxes, resort fees, and parking if those are being shared by the group. Exclude personal charges like room service, mini-bar, or pay-per-view — those should be paid by whoever incurred them.
How many travelers can I split between?
The 'split by nights' mode supports up to 6 travelers, each with their own night count. For an even split there's no upper limit — just enter the total number of people and the calculator divides the bill across all of them.
How is this different from just dividing the bill equally?
An equal split ignores who stayed longer. If you stayed 3 nights and a friend joined only for the last night, an equal split charges them the same $225 as you. Splitting by nights charges them only $81.82 — the cost of the one night they actually used.
Should I include the hotel deposit in the total?
No. Deposits are normally refunded, so they aren't part of the shared cost. Enter only the final charged amount. If part of a deposit was forfeited (for example a late-cancellation fee), include just the non-refunded portion.
What is 'cost per person per night' used for?
It's the best figure for comparing trips. A $75/person/night rate lets you compare a 3-night group trip directly against a 5-night stay or a different hotel. It's also the unit most travel budgets and per-diem reimbursements use.
Do resort fees and parking get split the same way?
Only if they're charged per room. A $30/night resort fee on a shared room is a room cost — split it with the rest of the bill. A $15/night parking fee per car is personal — each car owner pays their own, not the whole group.
Can I use this to settle the bill on Venmo, PayPal, or Splitwise?
Yes. Run the split, copy each person's share, and send that exact amount as a payment request. Using the calculator's number avoids the rounding errors people make doing the math in their head, especially with uneven stays.
