Final Grade Calculator
Walking into a final, the only number that matters is: what do I need to score to get the grade I want? Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth, and your target — this calculator tells you the exact percentage you need, and warns you when a target simply isn't reachable from the final alone.
When to use this calculator
- Knowing the minimum score you need on a final to pass or hit a target
- Deciding how hard to study based on what's actually required
- Checking whether an A is still mathematically possible before the final
- Planning study time across multiple finals by required score
- Confirming you've already secured a grade and can ease off
- Setting a realistic target when the dream grade is out of reach
How it works
1 min readWhat is a final grade calculator?
It tells you the score you must earn on a final exam to reach a target overall course grade, given your current grade and how much the final counts toward the total.
How It Works
Your current grade covers the portion of the course already completed — that is, everything except the final, which is (1 − weight) of the grade. The calculator solves for the final score that, combined with your current grade, produces your desired overall grade.
Formula
w = finalWeight / 100
requiredFinal = (desiredGrade − currentGrade × (1 − w)) / wIf requiredFinal > 100, the target isn't reachable from the final alone. If requiredFinal ≤ 0, you've already secured the target.
Worked Example
Current 80%, final worth 40%, want 70% overall:
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| w (weight as decimal) | 0.40 |
| Current contribution | 80 × (1 − 0.40) = 48 |
| Needed from final | 70 − 48 = 22 points |
| Required final score | 22 ÷ 0.40 = 55% |
Want 90% instead: (90 − 48) ÷ 0.40 = 105% → not achievable from the final alone.
Limitations
Frequently asked questions
What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Enter your current grade, the final's weight, and your passing target (often 60% or 70%). The calculator returns the exact score needed. For example, an 80% going in with a 40%-weighted final needs 55% to finish at 70%.
How is the required final score calculated?
requiredFinal = (desiredGrade − currentGrade × (1 − weight)) / weight, with weight as a decimal. It isolates the score that, combined with your existing grade, hits your target overall grade.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
It means your target grade can't be reached from the final alone — there aren't enough points left. You'd need extra credit, a curve, or to accept a lower final grade. The verdict will say 'Not achievable from the final alone.'
What does it mean if I need 0% or a negative score?
You've already locked in your target — even scoring zero on the final keeps you at or above your desired grade. You can confirm the exact cushion by raising the desired grade until the required score becomes positive.
How much is the final exam usually worth?
It varies widely — commonly 20% to 40% of the course grade, sometimes more for a comprehensive final. Check your syllabus for the exact weight and enter it; the result is very sensitive to this number.
Can I use this for a weighted grade with many categories?
Yes, as long as your 'current grade' already reflects the correct weighting of all completed work (homework, midterms, quizzes). The final's weight is the only remaining piece this calculator needs.
Does this account for extra credit or a curve?
No. It assumes a straight scale where the final maxes at 100%. If your final can score above 100% (bonus questions) or the course is curved, an 'unreachable' target may still be possible.
How do I find my current grade percentage?
Divide your earned points by the points possible so far, or use your gradebook's running percentage. Make sure it reflects category weights if your course uses them, since this calculator treats it as the weighted grade before the final.
