When to use this calculator
- Timing your last meal before a training session or competition to avoid digestive discomfort.
- Understanding why a high-fat meal provides prolonged satiety compared to a carbohydrate-heavy one.
- Estimating when the stomach is empty for intermittent fasting protocols.
- Discussing digestive timing with a physician or dietitian before a gastric procedure or endoscopy.
Gastric Emptying Time by Food Type (100 g reference, healthy adults)
| Food Category | Examples | Time per 100 g | Macronutrient driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water / juices / broths | Water, fruit juice, vegetable broth | ≈ 20 min | None — liquid clears rapidly |
| Soft fruits | Watermelon, melon, grapes | ≈ 30 min | Simple sugars, high water content |
| Raw leafy vegetables | Lettuce, spinach, cucumber | ≈ 40 min | Low calorie density, mostly water |
| Firm fruits | Apple, pear, peach | ≈ 45 min | Soluble fibre slows slightly |
| Cooked / root vegetables | Carrot, beetroot, potato | ≈ 55 min | Starch + softened fibre |
| Legumes | Lentils, chickpeas, beans | ≈ 90 min | Protein + complex carbohydrate |
| Refined carbohydrates | White bread, white rice, pasta | ≈ 2 h | Simple starch, low fat |
| Whole grains | Oats, brown rice, quinoa | ≈ 2.5 h | Soluble + insoluble fibre |
| Lean fish | Cod, sole, tuna | ≈ 2 h 45 min | Lean protein, minimal fat |
| Dairy | Milk, yogurt, fresh cheese | ≈ 3 h | Protein + fat combination |
| Eggs | Whole eggs, cooked egg whites | ≈ 3 h 15 min | Dense protein + fat (yolk) |
| Poultry (skinless) | Chicken, turkey breast | ≈ 3 h 30 min | Lean protein, low fat |
| Lean beef | Sirloin, round steak | ≈ 4 h | Dense protein + moderate fat |
| Nuts and seeds | Walnuts, almonds, peanuts | ≈ 4 h 30 min | High fat + protein density |
| Fatty beef cuts | Ribs, short ribs | ≈ 5 h | High fat triggers CCK slowdown |
| Fatty processed meats | Bacon, sausage, chorizo | ≈ 6 h | Highest fat content + additives |

How it works
How Long Does Food Take to Digest? Full Chart by Food Type
Gastric emptying is the process by which your stomach moves its contents into the small intestine. The table below shows reference digestion times for a 100 g portion — and common serving sizes — for every major food category:
| Food Type | Time (100 g) | Time (200 g) | Time (300 g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water, juices, broths | ≈ 20 min | ≈ 40 min | ≈ 60 min |
| Soft fruits (watermelon, melon) | ≈ 30 min | ≈ 60 min | ≈ 90 min |
| Raw leafy vegetables | ≈ 40 min | ≈ 80 min | ≈ 120 min |
| Firm fruits (apple, pear) | ≈ 45 min | ≈ 90 min | ≈ 135 min |
| Cooked / root vegetables | ≈ 55 min | ≈ 110 min | ≈ 165 min |
| Legumes | ≈ 90 min | ≈ 3 h | ≈ 4.5 h |
| Refined carbohydrates | ≈ 2 h | ≈ 4 h | ≈ 6 h |
| Whole grains | ≈ 2.5 h | ≈ 5 h | ≈ 7.5 h |
| Lean fish | ≈ 2 h 45 min | ≈ 5 h 30 min | ≈ 8 h 15 min |
| Dairy | ≈ 3 h | ≈ 6 h | ≈ 9 h |
| Eggs | ≈ 3 h 15 min | ≈ 6 h 30 min | ≈ 9 h 45 min |
| Chicken / turkey | ≈ 3.5 h | ≈ 7 h | ≈ 10.5 h |
| Lean beef | ≈ 4 h | ≈ 8 h | ≈ 12 h |
| Nuts and seeds | ≈ 4.5 h | ≈ 9 h | ≈ 13.5 h |
| Fatty beef cuts | ≈ 5 h | ≈ 10 h | ≈ 15 h |
| Fatty processed meats | ≈ 6 h | ≈ 12 h | ≈ 18 h |

How It's Calculated
The formula scales the per-100 g reference gastric emptying time in proportion to the portion entered:
Time (min) = BaseTime_per_100g × Portion_g / 100Example: 150 g of oats (base time = 150 min per 100 g):
150 × 150 / 100 = 225 minutes ≈ 3 h 45 minLinear proportional scaling is an accepted approximation for normal meal sizes (50–500 g). It does not account for mixed-meal interaction effects or individual variability.
Factors That Change Real-World Digestion Time
Full Digestion Process (Not Just the Stomach)
This calculator covers only the gastric phase. The complete process includes:
1. Mouth: Chewing and salivary amylase (seconds to minutes)
2. Stomach: Gastric emptying ← this calculator
3. Small intestine: Nutrient absorption (2–6 additional hours)
4. Large intestine: Water absorption and stool formation (12–48 hours)
Total time from ingestion to elimination is 24–72 hours in healthy adults.
Disclaimer
Times are population-average estimates for healthy adults based on gastric emptying scintigraphy research. They are not a substitute for evaluation by a gastroenterologist. If you experience persistent digestive symptoms (bloating, pain, nausea, prolonged fullness), consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Example: 200 g of skinless chicken breast
